English Cottage Garden Plan

With just a few seeds you can transform a small patch of soil into a mini cottage garden in a matter of weeks. One of the great joys of gardening is growing a plant from seed. Thrifty cottage gardeners have always swapped and saved seeds, ready for planting the following year. Here some of the easiest and prettiest annuals you can try.

All can be sown directly into the ground. The more you pick them, the more they flower. All sweet peas like rich, moist soil so make sure you add compost before you sow. Seeds can be planted in situ in April. Pinch out the leading shoot once you have a pair of leaves. As the plant grows upwards, regularly tie the stems to your framework. They will flower from June to September.

Tall and floriferous, cosmos are a great way to create an instant flower garden. Their delicate daisy flowers are disarmingly attractive and look especially dreamy when seen against summer skies. Sow directly into the soil in April or May and thin out as instructed on the packet. A few bamboo canes and some twine will do. Clarkias have long stems making them great for cutting. Sow the seeds where you want them to grow between April and May. Thin out in stages when they start becoming overcrowded and you should enjoy flowers from July onwards.

The thin spikes of spurred flowers may look delicate, but they will tolerate most soils and conditions. Direct sow in May and they will flower in July and August. Its evocative name is enough to make you want to plant it, but it is also a thing of exquisite beauty, like a finally crafted jewel. Directly sow into the soil anytime from April until June and thin out as instructed.

Deadhead regularly and you will extend the flowering into September. You can also pick the seeds and scatter them in other parts of the garden in the autumn for little pockets of love-in-a-mist joy next year. Nasturtiums have been popular cottage garden plants ever since they were introduced from Peru in the late 17th century. Nasturtiums can be used as climbers or as ground fillers, occupying spaces when other plants have finished flowering. They prefer poor soil and will seed super easily.

Plant seeds anytime between April and May for summer and autumn flowering. The leaves and flowers are edible. Other super-easy cottage-garden seeds to sow now include: sunflowers, zinnias, nicotania, calendula and annual toadflax. Plant your seeds in well-prepared ground. The soil should be free of stones, weeds and ideally quite fine.

You can either order special seed compost and add a thin layer of it to the top of your prepared soil, or you can sieve your soil with a garden sieve to get rid of any lumps. Follow the instructions on the packet.

Some seeds like light soils, others — such as sweet peas — like richer soils, ideally with added compost.

Protect from pets. If you have pets, protect your newly sown soil from their wandering paws by covering the area with chicken wire or judicially placed twigs. A simply-planted wooden crate or an old half-barrel — or just few terracotta pots grouped together — are enough to produce the desired effect. Happy cottage gardening. Climbing roses, bright hollyhocks, pathways edged with honeysuckle, blossom-filled orchards and wildflower meadows — there's nothing quite like a cottage garden. Claire Masset's new book 'Cottage Gardens' captures the idyllic British country garden and explores its history, with tips on how to create your own.

English Cottage Garden Plants List – Practical Home UK

The cottage garden is a distinct style that uses informal design, traditional materials, dense plantings, and a mixture of ornamental and edible plants. English in origin, it depends on grace and charm rather than grandeur and formal structure. Homely and functional gardens connected to cottages go back centuries, but their stylized reinvention occurred in s England, as a reaction to the more structured, rigorously maintained estate gardens with their formal designs and mass plantings of greenhouse annuals. The earliest cottage gardens were more practical than today's, with emphasis on vegetables and herbs, fruit trees, perhaps a beehive, and even livestock.

These tall biennials or short lived perennials are a mainstay of the cottage garden and look particularly effective lining a wall or fence.
